1. Please introduce yourself.

my name is garfield and i've been told multiple times that i look like charlie slimecicle

2. How long have you been making websites?

this is my first ever site, created in august of 2023. i've tried making separate sites beyond funnyorangecat, but they never really stuck around.

3. And what got you into the hobby?

i wanted a place where i could express myself freely, without the panopticon feeling of social media. i had tried carrd but i didn't really like it, i decided i wanted to make my site the old-fashioned way. then i found neocities, and here we are!

4. What kind of website are you most interested in?

i'm drawn to sites that are an extension of the webmaster, so personal and unique to who they are as a person that it cannot be replicated by anyone else.

5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?

uhhh i just kinda bullshit it....i start out with an image in my head of what i want and it develops over time. i probably should pan it out more but um. I Dont Wanna

6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.

YAYYY i like joroki and goooby's sites so much, they've been a huge inspiration to the site's current era. of course i was also inspired by sadgrl and cinni, but everyone on neocities is i think (insert that one xkcd comic about experts overestimating the average person's knowledge of their field)

7. What's your favourite part about making websites?

DESIGN!! i love design so much you guys

8. And the thing you struggle with the most?

the backend of getting stuff to actually work with js

9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?

different ones, i think it's more fun!!

10. How confident are you with CSS?

i think relatively confident? i could def make a basic layout for a page

11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?

i've never seen anyone use that before ever. so no

12. What is your favourite HTML element?

i feel like div is the objective correct answer

13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?

copy+paste the code for my favicon from another file because i never remember it

16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?

kind of, i try to keep it garfy but there are some pages where that theme wouldn't really fit

17. Are you more focused on content or design?

both i think! i love both writing and designing for my site

18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?

i did but i forgot to renew it....it was funnyorangecat.lol and it was hosted on porkbun

19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?

i think your site should be more about you rather than a specific aesthetic, but people can do whatever they want with their sites. the thing about retro sites is that they can be really cute or really ugly, depending on the style they go for

20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?

i think so?? i use the neocities code editor so i honestly don't know

21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?

PEAK!!!!

22. What do you think of button walls in particular?

sometimes a bit eyestraining but i love the feeling of community among the sites

23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?

i'd probably make a site with a more """"""edgy"""""" scenemo aesthetic, dedicated more to my irl self instead of my online garfield persona

24. Are you envious of other people's websites?

i don't think envious is the right word. when i see sites that i think are amazing, i feel motivated to improve and change my own site!

25. What text editor do you use?

neocities code editor.....gulp

26. Why do you use that one?

i didnt know you could use another one!!

27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?

i usually use https://postimages.org/, but if the image is important (like the button or favicon) i host it here

28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?

i think people overreacted about kyle drake's opinion on ai. idk if nekoweb is feasible enough to last as long as neocities has but i generally do not care about the debate at all

29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?

it uses 0.8% (7.57 MB) of my 1 GB storage. i don't know what that means

30. Do you keep local backups of your files?

no.........i should.....

31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?

HIGHLY VISUAL!!! i really like to look at things

32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?

i use a lot of orange and yellow obviously, but that's on purpose. i don't think i'd use orange ever if this site weren't themed after a certain orange character

33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?

i've thought about what i might do if i somehow lost access to editing the site for a long time, but i've never thought about actually quitting. my site brings me so much fulfillment and joy, the only way i could see myself quitting web design is......i don't see it actually

34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?

almost all of my online friends have some amount of html knowledge, not necessarily because i seek out other coders, but because i just tend to befriend nerds

35. Do people in your real life know about your website?

yeah! i'm proud of it i can't help showing it off

36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?

usually i'll go through a period where i'm barely updating, and then suddenly i'll regain inspiration and start updating every day for a while. i think the longest i've gone without consistent updates was around 3 months

37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?

not really, just because it's a lot of work to overhaul the entire theme. i change individual pages all the time though

38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?

i'd say both me-focused and hobby-focused!!

39. Do you do web design professionally?

no, since i haven't graduated yet, but i hope to someday!

yes, but not really stuff like instagram. i have a tumblr that i only use for reblogging, a pikidiary microblog, and a tiktok i scroll on once a year which i've never posted anything on

43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?

i use discord to talk to my irl buddies

44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?

i listen to music (see the fandom tab for my fav artists) or a youtube video in the background. my fav youtuber to listen to is matt rose

45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?

right now, i just have this site. i tried making another one but quickly found i didn't really have enough ideas to fill up a whole new site. maybe i'll try again

i think i do both? like i'm garfield obviously but i can also be max if i want

for the most part, but i don't really know any alternatives. i think there should be a way to add outlines to text that doesn't require 100 lines of text-shadow

ooh good question!! i really wanted a place to express myself. i had to mask pretty much all the time at school and didn't really have any hobbies at home. seasonal summertime depression was hitting hard and i really needed to pick up a new pastime, and i had been wanting to code for a while, so here we are!
